Sibling Sexual Abuse Support

Did you know that suppressed childhood stress and boundary violations can actually manifest as unexplained chronic physical pain later in life?

In this vital episode of The Impactful Parent, host Kristina Campos sits down with Maria Socolof—author, survivor, president of the nonprofit 5WAVES, Inc., and former senior environmental health research scientist with a master’s degree from Harvard. Together, they shine a compassionate, non-alarmist light on a topic far too often kept in the shadows: Sibling Sexual Trauma (SST) and the mind-body connection.

Navigating childhood safety can feel overwhelming, but understanding body boundaries and nervous system cues is one of the most powerful tools a parent has. Drawing from her memoir, The Invisible Key, Maria shares how her own unexplained chronic pain led to recovering suppressed childhood memories—and breaks down the physical warning signs every parent of school-aged children should know.

Sibling Sexual Abuse Support

The Hidden Signs of Sibling Trauma: What Every Parent Needs to Know About Body Boundaries and Chronic Pain

When we think about protecting our children, our minds naturally go to outside threats—stranger danger, online privacy, or schoolyard bullying. But there is a silent, far less discussed topic that impacts families across the country: Sibling Sexual Trauma (SST) and the mysterious ways unaddressed boundary violations manifest as physical pain in a growing child’s body.

On a recent episode of The Impactful Parent, host Kristina Campos sat down with Maria Socolof—author of The Invisible Key, president and cofounder of the nonprofit 5WAVES, Inc., and a former senior environmental health research scientist with a master’s degree from Harvard.

As both an accomplished researcher and a survivor, Maria offers a uniquely grounded, scientific perspective on how early boundary violations shape a child’s nervous system—and how parents can cultivate safety at home without leading from a place of fear or panic.

Why Sibling Boundary Violations Stay Hidden

Sibling sexual abuse is one of the most under-reported forms of childhood trauma. Unlike outside threats, boundary violations inside the home often blend into the noise of everyday family life.

Parents naturally want to view interactions between brothers and sisters through the lens of harmless curiosity, roughhousing, or normal childhood play. However, when confusion, coercion, or secret-keeping enters the dynamic, the boundary line gets crossed. Children affected by these dynamics often stay silent due to guilt, confusion, or a deep desire to protect their family and siblings.

The Mind-Body Connection: How Trauma Stores in the Body

One of the most striking aspects of Maria Socolof’s work is the connection between suppressed emotional trauma and physical health. After suffering from an unexplained physical injury and severe chronic pain at age 40, Maria discovered that her body was holding onto long-repressed memories of childhood trauma.

When a child experiences a boundary violation and feels forced to keep it secret, their nervous system gets locked into a persistent state of fight, flight, or freeze. Over time, this chronic internal stress manifests physically.

Somatic Red Flags in School-Aged Children

Parents should keep an eye out for recurring, unexplained physical symptoms that don’t have a clear medical cause:

  • Frequent, unexplained stomachaches or headaches before bed or during downtime.

  • Sudden regression in sleep patterns, nightmare complaints, or fear of sleeping in their own room.

  • Chronic muscle tension, guarding, or extreme sensitivity regarding personal space and physical touch.

  • Abrupt changes in emotional expression, such as sudden withdrawal, intense clinging, or explosive outbursts.

3 Practical Steps for Healthy Home Boundaries

Protecting your household doesn’t mean creating an atmosphere of suspicion or fear. Instead, it means establishing clear, universal family rules around body autonomy that apply to everyone.

  1. Establish Universal Body Privacy Rules: Teach children that certain body parts (anything covered by a swimsuit) are strictly private. Enforce simple home rules like closing doors when changing, knocking before entering, and respecting when a sibling says “stop.”

  2. Eliminate “Secret-Keeping”: Shift family language away from secrets. Teach your kids the difference between a fun surprise (like a birthday present) and a secret. Reassure them that no secret is ever too big or scary to share with a trusted adult.

  3. Listen to Physical Cues: If your child frequently complains of physical distress without a clear medical cause, pay attention to context. Note when these symptoms flare up and create low-pressure, quiet spaces for open-ended check-ins.

How to Respond if a Child Discloses

If a child approaches you with a boundary concern or disclosure, your immediate reaction sets the foundation for their healing:

  • Stay Calm: Children gauge the severity and “wrongness” of a situation by their parent’s immediate reaction. Take a breath to keep your voice steady.

  • Validate Their Courage: Thank them directly for telling you. Reassure them that they are safe, they are not in trouble, and you believe them.

  • Avoid Immediate Panic or Blame: Focus entirely on support and safety in the moment, rather than making immediate accusations in front of the children.

Hope and Resources for Families

Understanding sibling boundaries isn’t about fostering anxiety—it is about empowering your family with clarity, protection, and body awareness. Healing and prevention are both entirely possible when light is brought to topic once kept in the dark.
