Preparing Neurodivergent Teens for College

s your neurodivergent teen truly ready to step onto a college campus and take charge of their independence?

Transitioning from high school to higher education is a massive leap for any child, but for students with ADHD, autism, or dyslexia, it comes with a unique set of challenges, rules, and opportunities. Watching your child struggle with focus, late-night study meltdowns, or organization can leave you asking: How on earth will they manage college on their own?

In this episode of The Impactful Parent, host Kristina Campos is joined by veteran professor and founder of Innovative Collegiate Consultants, Dr. Tara Williams. Together, they tear down common myths surrounding learning differences in college, discuss the massive shift in executive functioning demands, and break down how to build life-changing self-advocacy skills before move-in day.

Preparing Your Neurodivergent Teen for College: From High School Chaos to Campus Confidence

Watching your child struggle with organization, focus, or late-night homework meltdowns can make the idea of college feel daunting. Transitioning from high school to higher education is a massive leap for any student, but for neurodivergent teens—those with ADHD, autism, or dyslexia—it comes with a unique set of challenges, rules, and opportunities.

On a recent episode of The Impactful Parent, I sat down with Dr. Tara Williams, founder of Innovative Collegiate Consultants and a veteran professor with over 20 years of experience helping students thrive. We discussed how to dismantle common misconceptions, build essential executive functioning skills, and prepare your teen long before campus move-in day.

Debunking the Myth: Struggles Don’t Equal Failure

The biggest misconception parents have is thinking that if a student struggled in middle or high school, they can’t thrive in college. With the right tools, accommodations, and support systems, neurodivergent students can—and do—succeed in higher education.

The Biggest Shifts to Expect

When moving from K-12 to college, two major dynamics change immediately:

  • Self-Advocacy Takes Center Stage: In high school, parents and teachers often manage IEPs or 504 plans. In college, students must learn to communicate their needs, reach out to accessibility offices, talk to professors, and initiate study groups themselves.

  • Time Management Demands Skyrocket: Instead of a rigid, back-to-back high school schedule, college students face large gaps of free time. Without structured guidance, those open blocks can lead to severe procrastination or overwhelm.

How to Build Executive Functioning at Home

You don’t have to wait until move-in day to build these skills. Try implementing these routines at home first:

  • Practice Mirroring Work Habits: Sit at the table together for a set period (e.g., 6:00 to 7:30 PM) to do focused work without phones. This models focused attention and makes asking for help feel natural.

  • Shift from Manager to Consultant: Instead of checking their grade portals or reminding them constantly about deadlines, ask guiding questions: “What is your plan for checking your email today?” or “How would you like to set up your calendar for this week?”

Normalizing the Journey

If your student hits a roadblock during their first semester, remember that success isn’t linear. Encourage them to utilize campus accessibility resources, build peer study groups, and visit professor office hours early on. And if a major change, a trade school, or a community college pathway ends up being the right fit, celebrate that step forward—every student’s path to independence looks different.

It takes a lot to run a family! Here are a few products I recommend.
