Unmotivated Boys. What can parents do?

Is your son losing his drive, disengaging from school, or spending all his time glued to screens? You’re not alone, and it’s not just in your head! In this episode of The Impactful Parent, host Kristina Campos sits down with renowned family physician, psychologist, and best-selling author Dr. Leonard Sax to dive into the growing epidemic of unmotivated boys and underachieving young men.

Together, they unpack the six critical factors driving this shift—from school environments that alienate boys to video game displacement, ADHD medications, environmental endocrine disruptors, shifts in cultural masculinity, and online risks like AI-generated media and pornography. Most importantly, Dr. Sax provides actionable strategies parents can implement immediately to help re-engage their sons and turn things around.

Unmotivated Boys: What Parents Need to Know and How to Help

Are you watching your son drift away, lose motivation, or disengage from school and real life? If you feel like your son is losing his drive, you’re not alone—and it’s not just in your head.

Girls now outperform boys across every subject in K–12 education, earn higher grades, and make up 70% of high school valedictorians nationwide. At universities, women outnumber men 3 to 2 and hold 70% of honors degrees. Boys aren’t just falling behind because girls are doing better; boys are actively doing worse than they were 30 years ago.

To understand why this is happening and what parents can do, I sat down with family physician, psychologist, and best-selling author Dr. Leonard Sax. In his book, Boys Adrift, he identifies six critical factors driving this growing epidemic.

The 6 Factors Driving the Epidemic of Unmotivated Boys

Schools Unfriendly to Boys

Modern early childhood education focuses heavily on sitting still, early literacy, and rigid academics rather than movement and hands-on learning. When young boys are penalized for normal boyish energy or creative play, they quickly form a lasting mindset that “school is stupid” or “school is for girls”.

Video Games and Displacement

Video games are engineered to be immersive and addictive. Beyond a threshold of six hours per week, screen time linearly replaces homework, exercise, face-to-face social interaction, and sleep. Furthermore, violent video games alter personality traits over time, making kids more selfish and impatient.

ADHD Medications

Common prescription stimulants (such as Adderall or Vyvanse) can damage the motivational center of the brain over long-term use. Often, active or disengaged boys are misdiagnosed with ADHD when they simply need a different educational environment.

Environmental Endocrine Disruptors

Testosterone levels in young men today are nearly half of what they were two generations ago. Environmental toxins—such as phthalates leached from plastic bottles, food containers, and microwaved plastics—act as synthetic estrogens, suppressing the testosterone boys need for drive and ambition.

The Collapse of Cultural Masculinity

In past generations, popular culture provided models of manhood centered on integrity, courtesy, and courage. Today, positive male role models are rare in mainstream media, leaving young men with little constructive guidance on what it means to be a healthy gentleman.

Generative AI, Explicit Media, and the Manosphere

With easy access to AI tools, young teens are now creating custom explicit media, altering their brain’s reward system and skewing their perception of healthy, real-world relationships.

How Parents Can Take Action Today

While these cultural shifts feel overwhelming, parents hold immense power in their own homes. Here are practical steps Dr. Sax recommends to re-engage your son:

  • Find a Boy-Friendly School: If your son’s school is consistently punitive toward his natural development, seek out an environment that values hands-on learning and physical movement.

  • Enforce Strict Screen Boundaries: Limit video gaming to no more than 40 minutes on school nights and 6 hours total per week. Check content ratings using tools like Common Sense Media.

  • Reduce Plastic Exposure: Switch from plastic water bottles to stainless steel canteens, buy food in glass packaging, and never microwave food in plastic containers.

  • Connect Him with Good Male Mentors: Ensure your son has strong, positive men in his life—whether through coaches, pastors, family friends, or organized youth mentorship programs.

  • Remove Screens from Bedrooms: Keep all phones, game consoles, and internet-connected devices out of your child’s bedroom overnight, and establish no-earbud rules during family car rides to encourage conversation.

It takes a lot to run a family! Here are a few products I recommend.
