Silenced to Soaring: Decoding the Silent Treatment and Reclaiming Your Power
Have you ever sat in your car for just five minutes after running errands, staring at the steering wheel, realizing you’re carrying a weight you can’t quite put into words? Have you ever walked away from a painful conflict at home thinking, “Am I crazy? Am I just being too sensitive?”
If you are a high-functioning mom who handles it all—the school schedules, the lunches, the career, and the daily hustle—but at home you feel deeply lonely, dismissed, or like you’re constantly walking on eggshells just to keep the peace, this is for you.

The Line Between a “Cool-Off” and Emotional Abuse
When a partner pulls away after a fight, it’s easy to excuse it. We tell ourselves they just need space, or that it’s a bad argument. But Amma clarifies that there is a stark difference between a healthy boundary and a tool of control.
True emotional withdrawal and the abusive silent treatment consist of three specific components:

The Duration: The silence and lack of communication last for 24 hours or more, usually with zero warning.

The Energy: It is accompanied by a highly hostile, intense, and angry energy.

No Repair: When the partner finally decides to speak again, they expect everything to return to normal with no explanation, no apology, and no conversation about what went wrong.
This is fundamentally different from a cooling-off period (where a partner communicates, “I’m flooded, I need a few hours to think, let’s talk tonight”) or an involuntary shutdown (a trauma-induced freeze response where the person later comes back to repair the relationship). The abusive silent treatment is a pattern used to control, dominate, and manipulate your behavior by exploiting your deep human need for connection.
Why High-Functioning Moms Are Often Targeted
One of the most insidious parts of emotional abuse is the “fine facade.” Amma points out that this type of narcissistic behavior frequently targets incredibly resourceful, independent, and emotionally mature women.
Because you have high internal resources, you are excellent at performing on the outside—volunteering as the school chaperone, running a business, or leading workshops—while silently dying on the inside.
The Hidden Cost of the Facade: Enduring high levels of domestic stress while trying to look flawless to the outside world carries massive physiological consequences. It is a direct contributor to severe chronic stress, depression, anxiety, and even physical conditions like autoimmune diseases.
The Psychological Mechanics: Why It Feels Like Physical Pain
If you have ever felt physically sick or entirely destabilized when being ignored by your partner, you are not crazy.
Neurological research shows that the silent treatment activates the exact same pain centers in the human brain as physical abuse. Because human beings are biologically wired for connection as a survival mechanism, emotional abandonment triggers a massive trauma response: fight, flight, freeze, or fawn.
For many women, the fawn response takes over. You find yourself panicking, overcompensating, and asking, “What did I do? Let me fix this.” When your partner finally speaks to you again, your brain experiences a rush of relief. This cruel cycle is what experts call a trauma bond—where the person causing the horror is also the only one who can grant the relief.
How Silent Abuse Impacts Your Children
Many parents think they can shield their children from the tension by not fighting in front of them. But children are emotional sponges. Even if you aren’t screaming at each other, kids absorb the toxic, hostile atmosphere of a silent home.
Amma shares that this constant baseline of unaddressed anxiety in the home environment can deeply disrupt a child’s emotional development, contributing to long-term anxiety, depression, or attention challenges. It becomes their internal blueprint for what a “normal” relationship looks like.
Breaking the cycle requires absolute honesty. Reclaiming your home environment teaches your children how to establish healthy boundaries and models true emotional expression.
