Supporting High Performing Child Athletes

Raising a Champion: Navigating the World of Elite Youth Sports and High-Level Academics

We’ve all seen the highlight reels—the gold medals, the podium finishes, and the college scholarship signings. But behind every elite student-athlete is a parent navigating a complex web of logistics, finances, and emotional support.

On a recent episode of The Impactful Parent, host Kristina Campos sat down with Gosha Bettincourt, a senior healthcare leader and “sports mom” to a national-level elite diver. Their conversation pulled back the curtain on what it actually takes to support a child who is chasing greatness.

The “Spark” vs. The Push

One of the most profound takeaways from Gosha was the importance of the child’s internal drive. For her son, the transition to elite diving wasn’t a parent-led directive; it was a personal passion.

“It has to come from them,” Gosha explains. “As parents, we are the support crew, not the engine.”

If you are constantly the one waking your child up for practice or pushing them to train, you might be heading toward burnout. The “spark” must belong to the child for the journey to be sustainable.

The Academic Wall: Why Traditional Schooling Fails Athletes

When a child begins training 20 to 30 hours a week, the traditional 8:00 AM to 3:00 PM school schedule often becomes the biggest obstacle. This is where many parents feel “stuck” between their child’s athletic dreams and their educational future.

Gosha shared her family’s solution: Crimson Global Academy (CGA). By moving to a high-caliber online model, her son was able to:

  • Take AP classes and maintain Ivy-League level rigor.

  • Adjust his schedule around international competitions and intensive training camps.

  • Remove the stress of “making up work” that typically plagues student-athletes in traditional settings.

The Financial Reality (Beyond the Team Fees)

Raising an elite athlete is an investment. Gosha warns parents to look beyond the monthly club dues. To truly support a high-performing child, you have to account for:

  1. Sports Psychology: Mental resilience is just as important as physical strength.

  2. Specialized Healthcare: Physical therapists and sports-specific doctors are essential for injury prevention.

  3. Travel Logistics: National competitions mean flights, hotels, and time away from work.

Avoiding the Burnout Trap

How do you know when your child is doing too much? Gosha looks for “Yellow Flags.” If the child starts making excuses to skip practice or loses their usual post-win excitement, it’s time to pause.

The goal isn’t just to produce a great athlete—it’s to raise a healthy, well-adjusted adult. Sometimes, “stepping back” is the most impactful thing a parent can do.

Final Thoughts from Kristina Campos

As parents, our job is to provide the guardrails while our kids drive the car. Whether your child is into diving, soccer, or the arts, the principles remain the same: listen more, support often, and don’t be afraid to pivot when the traditional path no longer fits.
