TRANSCRIPT

Beating the “Summer Slide” and Screen-Time Battles

The transition from a structured school year to the “unstructured” summer can be a shock for both parents and kids. Without a plan, children naturally gravitate toward the path of least resistance: screens.

In this episode of The Impactful Parent, host Kristina Campos shares her proven strategies for moving from a rigid, frustrating schedule to a predictable summer rhythm. By cultivating opportunities for creativity and independence, you can turn a season of “I’m bored” into a season of growth.

Key Strategies for a Screen-Free Summer

Establish a “Predictable Rhythm”: Instead of a strict hourly schedule that often fails by mid-June, create a daily flow. Kristina suggests making screen time a “dessert”—something earned after responsibilities, outdoor play, or reading are completed.

The Boredom Jar & Innovation Station: Kids often default to tech because they lack the initiative to start a new project. By creating a “Boredom Jar” filled with activity slips (water balloon fights, Lego challenges, upcycling projects) or a dedicated “Innovation Station” stocked with craft supplies, you give them a visual menu of choices.

Passion Projects: Summer is the perfect time for kids to dive deep into a specific interest, like birdhouse building or coding. These “passion projects” don’t just kill boredom; they build a portfolio of interests that can eventually help with college admissions.

The 5-5-5 Rule: To give kids a sense of autonomy, have each child choose:

5 Places they want to go (e.g., the zoo, the park).

5 Things they want to learn (e.g., magic tricks, a new language).

5 Treats they want to have (e.g., ice cream, a specific video game level-up).

Real-World Learning & Skill Building

Kristina emphasizes that summer is a prime opportunity for “Life School.” These are the essential skills often missed during the busy academic year:

  • Cooking & Baking: Great for practicing fractions and observing chemical reactions.

  • Financial Literacy: Give kids a summer budget or allowance and let them experience the “real world” consequence of overspending.

  • Navigation: Ditch the GPS! Have your kids use a physical map to navigate to a local landmark or museum.

  • Volunteering: Engaging in community service is a powerful way to build empathy and combat the “summer blues” or feelings of isolation.

The “Golden Rule” for Parents

The most important takeaway? Lead by example. If you want your children to put down their phones, you must be willing to do the same. Kristina recommends announcing your phone use (e.g., “I’m just checking the weather for our bike ride, then putting this away”), so children understand the difference between productive tech use and mindless scrolling.

Final Tip: Expect an adjustment period. Boredom is the precursor to creativity. If you hold firm through the initial whining, your children will eventually find their spark.
