Safety Lessons Every Parent Needs To Teach Their Child

Host: Kristina Campos

Introduction: Empowering Kids for the Real World

[00:00] Keeping your child safe is a primary concern for every parent. But let’s face it: we can’t be with them 100% of the time. Instead of just trying to protect them ourselves, we need to equip our kids with the knowledge to protect themselves. Today, we’re talking about empowering our kids to navigate the world safely.

Section 1: Physical Safety & Situational Awareness

Lesson 1: Awareness of Surroundings [00:48] In a world of screens, kids are often distracted. Teach your child to put the phone away while walking. Looking down makes them an easy target. Encourage them to walk with confidence and purpose.

  • Pro-Tip: Make it a game! At the park, have them close their eyes and describe what’s around them to practice being observant.

Lesson 2 & 3: Moving and Staying Out of Reach [02:14] If someone tries to grab your child, they need to know how to move. Martial arts or self-defense classes are great, but you can also practice at home. Use games like tag or “slap hands” to teach them to be fast and intentional with their movements. It’s not just about shying away; it’s about stepping back and running away if needed [03:29].

Lesson 4: The Power of a Convincing “NO” [04:19] Can your child really say “no” to a stranger? They need to practice standing tall, making eye contact, and saying “STOP” with conviction. Many parents accidentally teach too much compliance. While respect for adults is important, it should never come at the cost of being a pushover. Predators target kids who won’t fight back [05:43].

Lesson 5: Setting Boundaries [05:52] Teach your child that boundaries are essential for their mental and physical well-being. Practice saying “Please stop” to peers and adults alike. For older kids, practice phrases like “I’m going to leave” if a situation feels uncomfortable.

Section 2: Communication and Planning

Lesson 6: The Rule of Announcement [06:50] Get your kids into the habit of always announcing where they are and getting permission before changing plans. Kristina shares that she even role-models this by announcing when she’s leaving a room to go to the bathroom! This makes checking in a natural habit as they grow into teenagers.

Lesson 7: Always Have a Plan B [07:47] Brainstorm “what if” scenarios. What if you get lost? What if you don’t make the team? For teenagers going to parties, Plan B is vital for escaping peer pressure safely. Children with a Plan B are more confident and less traumatized when things go wrong [08:30].

Lesson 8: Make a Commotion [09:09] If threatened, teach your child to fight, scream, and kick. Predators use threats to keep kids quiet. Teach your child that “getting big” and making a scene is the right course of action. Never hide the threat; tell a trusted adult immediately.

Section 3: Navigating the Online World

[10:10] Online safety is a whole different realm. Predators use specific tactics to bait children:

  1. Posing as Peers: Predators often lie about their age to build trust slowly [10:55].

  2. Phishing Links: Teach kids not to click links, even if they look official or appear to come from a friend [12:30].

  3. Promising Gifts: Free music, game “level-ups,” or products are common baits used to install malware [14:04].

  4. Fake Hacking Threats: Predators may claim they’ve already hacked a device to blackmail a child into sending photos or money [15:01].

  5. The “Modeling Agency” Scam: Flattery about beauty or fame is used to solicit explicit images [16:12].

  6. Reciprocal Acts: The “I’ll show you mine if you show me yours” tactic is used to groom children for dangerous acts [17:13].

Section 4: Prevention Strategies for Parents

[18:41] How can we prevent our children from becoming targets?

  • Maturity over Age: Don’t ask what age a child should get a phone; ask if they are mature enough to follow rules and if you are ready to monitor them [19:04].

  • Screenshot Everything: Teach kids to trust their gut and save evidence of anything that feels “off” rather than deleting it [19:45].

  • Parental Controls: Use tools like Qustodio as a deterrent, but don’t rely on them entirely. Kids are smart and can find workarounds; use the controls to “make their bad choices hard” [22:00].

  • Safe Hardware: Consider phones like Gab Wireless, which look like smartphones but have no internet or social media access [23:17].

Conclusion

[24:31] Safety is a heavy topic, but parenting is ultimately about preparing our children for the real world. By arming them with these tools, you are becoming a more impactful parent.
